Determining the Right Fence Height for Large Breed Dog Owners

Having a big, energetic dog is a great source of joy and excitement. They make terrific companions, fun workout partners, and reliable guardians. But all that energy and size can sometimes be a challenge to contain. When a dog owner of a large breed is off at work or lacking the energy levels to run around with their canine pal, a fenced-in yard can provide a great area for the dog to stay active. Owners need to be aware, however, that their dog will naturally be curious about the world of distractions beyond the fence, and may look for a way to get out of the yard. Making sure the fence is of the right height and material is crucial to keeping man’s best friend in the yard and out of trouble.

    Fence Height

The most important thing to consider when selecting the right fence for a yard to keep in a large breed of dog is the height. Larger dogs like huskies, German shepherds, and others are not only large but were often bred for their athletic abilities as well. In short, they can jump. A fence that is four feet in height is unlikely to keep a bigger dog contained, especially a younger one. Large breed dog owners investing in a fence should ere on the side of caution and opt for a fence that is six feet high.

    Fence Material

It’s not just the height of a fence that determines its effectiveness at keeping dogs in. A fence made of the wrong material, even at eight feet tall, may be susceptible to breakouts. While chain link fences are an attractive option to some homeowners due to their affordability, they also offer ambitious dogs a toehold that can be used to climb up and out of the yard. A solid panel fence made of wood or composite vinyl may be slightly more expensive, but it will do a better job of keeping the dog in and look better aesthetically.

The Best Time to Install a New Fence

Whether replacing an old, worn-out fence or adding a new one for the first time, homeowners who are installing a fence should consider the time of year when planning this project. While spring and summer are the traditional times for most outdoor upgrades, a professional fence company can get the job done any time of year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen (which isn’t a common problem in Georgia). Smart homeowners could save time and money by opting for the less popular seasons. These are the five benefits of fence installation in the fall and winter months.

    Faster Service

Because spring and summer are the high seasons for new fences, homeowners who purchase a new fence when it’s cold outside could benefit from fast installation. When the schedule is wide open, it may be possible to get a new fence with only a minimal wait time, which is rarely the case in the summer. In addition, decreased demand may make it easier to deal with bureaucratic issues, such as obtaining permits and delineating property lines.

    Discounted Prices

Homeowners who want to get the most for their money should purchase their new fence in the off-season. Due to fewer people hiring contractors in the fall and winter, discounts on labor and materials are often available.

    Less Yard Disruption

Grass and gardens are already dormant in the winter, so cold-weather fence installation means less disruption to the landscape. This is especially convenient for those who prize their lawns, flowers, and produce. They can plan their garden around the new fence rather than skipping a season for construction.

    Enhanced Privacy

When trees are bare, the yard is wide open with little shade and less privacy. Installing a fence can eliminate this problem so that homeowners can feel comfortably secluded, even without the cover of leaves, branches, and shrubbery.

    Increased Summertime Enjoyment

No one wants to spend the summer indoors because a construction crew is working in the yard. Homeowners who have their fences installed in winter can peacefully enjoy the outdoors come spring, making the most of those beautiful warmer days.
